Hi Owen, I first came across your work when your book Chavs was recommended me by a well meaning middle-class friend of mine after we had had a conversation discussing how I felt the middleclasses were misunderstanding and patronising the working class in the wake of the brexit referendum (I'd voted remain myself, but had been appalled by the bile poured out online on those who had voted leave)
Although I found some of the points you made in your book interesting and not without merit, I found your whole take on the word "chav" itself deeply offensive. I grew up working class, in a working class area, went to a predominantly working class school and have worked in construction (on the tools, not office ever since. Everyone i grew up with and have worked with in adult life used the word chav, not as an insult for working class people, but for skiving, violent, feckless scrotes that made everyone around themselves lives miserable. I still use the word now. I found your book just incredibly patronising. It felt as though you were admitting that you see everyone that doesn't work with a keyboard for a living as "chavs", but because you can't bring yourself to admit that you're scared of us, you wanted to tell everyone you pitied us instead.
Am I wrong?
